Colin has been working in the legal field for a considerable amount of time, building experience over the 25+ years since his humble beginnings as a paralegal at a small local law firm while a studying Law. Since then, he has worked in various positions both as in-house counsel and in private practice. More recently Colin decided to work for himself as a self-employed lawyer, which is when he applied to Vario; “The reason I signed up to Vario is, as a solo practitioner, I have very little free time and it is nice to have someone else out there chasing down leads and opportunities on my behalf. Vario has made sure there is always something in the pipeline even when I don’t have the time to do any marketing or networking” Colin describes.
As Colin explains, as a self-employed legal business owner, he is able to find work via Vario which he would not necessarily be able to source himself. “Vario has enabled me to stay involved in high end work on a part time basis. The fact that the assignments “come and go” has suited me. To an extent, I can choose the type of work and my level of involvement. In some matters, I have been more of a consultant to the firm and in others I have been embedded with the client’s in-house team. The flexibility is appealing. It sounds clichéd but it is the best of both worlds” Colin elaborates.
Although Colin is no stranger to a more flexible career being self-employed, he has enjoyed the flexibility that comes with short term project-based working; “Like a lot of middle-aged men, I have really got into hiking. I have been on a few treks over the last 12 months and have some more in the diary. Hoping to do the Three Capes Track this year if borders stay open and we can travel to Tasmania. Once you get to my age its really a choice of either walking or cycling and I don’t look very good in lycra!”
Colin summarises his experience of Vario as follows “Vario has been a useful supplement to my own private practice. It also feels like you are part of something bigger and its always good to know there is a global law firm behind you if you need some assistance on a job.”
